I love packing. I hate packing. It used to be that my packing started with me taking every item of appropriate clothing I owned and putting it all on a huge pile on the bed. Then I'd work out how many outfits I needed for each day. Then the huge pile of clothing would freak me out and I'd do a google search on 'how to pack for a weekend away'. Then I'd look at Instagram and I'd start looking for #packingtips but would usually get distracted by #catsofinstagram and @HumansofNY and by then it would be after midnight so I'd just fall asleep on the pile of clothing.
However, a little while ago I worked out a packing formula. No, don't worry, it's not a maths formula. God knows if it was, it wouldn't be me writing it.
There are only two things to remember:
1. Pack only THREE colours (two neutral and one colour)
2. Everything has to be able to be worn TWICE*
(*Exception to rule: evening or special occasion dresses don't have to be worn twice. Clearly you don't have to wear your tropical beach wedding guest dress to breakfast with your flip flops.)
The reason it works is because the neutrals allow everything to work back with each other and you cut down the number of colours you need for your accessories and shoes. For this weekend away I've chosen black, white and pink as my key colours: four dresses and one open pool robe. The dresses will all go with high heels or flats and a couple of different belts. All I'll add now to my bag are a pair of heels, a pair of flat sandals, a pair of sneakers, a swimsuit, a cashmere wrap, a cotton sarong, a stack of bangles, a pile of belts, a beach bag that will work day to night, something to wear to sleep and my makeup bag and voila! Effortless packing. I might even be in bed before midnight, unless I get distracted by what's trending on #beachlife half way through.
